The Vessel
An atmospheric illustration, first drawn in monochrome then colored to build a distinctive mood and sense of depth.
The Vessel is a personal image: a man in a suit, standing between ancient columns, whose head is replaced by a half-filled glass bowl. The picture does not say whether it is emptying or filling.
The starting point
Making a surreal image with very simple means: one figure, one setting, one strange idea at the centre. Magritte is never far away.
How it was made
The image was first built in black and white to set the values, then coloured: washed-out sky, dry grass, mist at the foot of the columns. The crops in the series show the texture up close, and the final image is presented as a poster and framed.
